| Bengalese Finch: Sexing Bengalese can be sexed relatively easily by their behaviour. Basically cocks sing and dance, hens do not. To elaborate, during his courtship behaviour, the cock has a little ritual display... He will perform a little warbling song whilst dancing. His little dance begins by him raising his body and head tall, spreading his legs wide apart, whilst fanning and pointing his tail, so his head and tail are almost at right angles to one another. He then puffs up his body plumage and turns his body quickly from side to side, also fanning and flicking his tail and occassionally his wings in rhythum to his movements. His beak is wide open while he sings. He will also hop slightly along the perch if the hen is far away or moving from him.
Juveniles are not so adapt at singing. This they will learn in time, until their song becomes quite melodious. Both sexes make a sort of quiet contented clucking when they enter their nest. Hens also make a monotonous chirp when they are particularly happy ...but only cocks sing! |
