I housed my proven breeding pair in an outdoor aviary measuring approximately 8' long x 3' wide x 6' tall. This is the minimum size and bigger is obviously better. If you can afford to build a larger aviary then please do so, as your Blackbirds will definitely thank you for the increased flight room.

The mesh I use 1/2" x 1/2" 19 gauge, galvanized welded wire mesh, which is very small and thus keep out majority of predators and pests.

Blackbirds do not require a shelter, just a covered area in their outdoor flight where they can be out of the wind and rain. My covered area spans the width of the flight and extends halfway down the back, the flight is roofed halfway and the sides are protected by 2' square panels fitted close to the back. This creates a section at the back of the flight which is almost 'boxed-off' i.e. roof, back and part side covered with plywood, which ensures a dry, draught-free area.

The pair's nest sits in the left-hand corner of the covered area. The nest is a wicker hanging basket. The nest is left in all year round so they can breed and roost... and they do use it at night all year round.

For perching, use conifer branches in varying thicknesses- from the diameter of your little finger to the span of your wrist.

To add a 'woodland feel' and seclusion, place conifer foliage and branches all over the mesh.

Cover the floor with a deep layer of bark chippings, as they love to dig. This is replaced annually. For ease of cleaning, place a sheet of newspaper under main perches to catch droppings, cover with bark chippings and replace each week. It is best to have a concrete or slabbed footing beneath the bark to prevent wild animals digging in.

Food should be provided in an earthenware bowl (stainless steel scares them) and green cat litter trays, the latter which is also used for the drinking/bathing water (Blackbirds love to bathe!).
