Eurasian Blackbird: Taxonomy & Wild Distribution

The Eurasian Blackbird is from the genus Turdus which includes all thrush-like birds such as the Song and Mistle Thrush, Fieldfare, Redwing and Ring Ouzel.

Heralds from Europe (hence the international name of: Eurasian Blackbird). The Blackbird is widespread and numerous in most parts of Europe, although in majority of the southern regions, Blackbirds are restricted to hilly or mountainous areas.

They are an abundant resident throughout Britain, with numbers increasing during the Autumn and Winter by birds migrating in from the continent. Blackbirds are conditionally migrant, with the dominant cocks remaining in the UK to protect their territories and the subordianate cocks migrating to mainland Europe at Autumn, returning at the beginning of Spring to take a chance at a territory.

In nature, the Blackbird breeds and winters in woods, farmland, gardens, waste ground and hedges.

Blackbirds are small to medium-sized singing birds (i.e. songbirds) noted for a clear melodious song, usually having brownish upper plumage and a spotted breast. They have a stocky body, straight bill and upright posture. Size is approximately 10" or 24-25cm.

They often hop on ground when foraging. Eggs are always blue speckled.
