Eastern
Rosellas
I
hope to breed from my Eastern Rosella hen (Platycercus eximus eximus) in the near future.
My Eastern is not a Golden Mantled Rosella (GMR, Platycercus eximius cecilae), as some people have confused
her with before. The Eastern is the nominate race and the Golden
Mantled is a sub-species, along with the Tasmanian (Platycercus eximus diemenensis).
The Eastern
is rarely seen in captivity, as they have dull green to mustard green scallops,
not the more stiking golden yellow of the GMR, which is said to
be more visually appealing (though I prefer the subtlety and blending
of colours of the Eastern). The Tasmanian is rarely seen in aviculture - it looks like the Eastern, but has larger white cheek patches and a deeper red head.
Easterns should not be mated to GMRs
as this will produce hybrids and reduce the value of any remaining
or established captive Eastern Rosella lines.
I
currently have 1 Eastern Rosella hen.

Green. Very well coloured hen, with red feathers extending

Quiet

Bought
from a pet shop aged 6 months. Was presumed a cock due to
her extensive red, but now in full adult plumage and is
definately a hen. |
